Education in a Pandemic: Learning from Illinois Students & Caregivers to Plan for the Road Ahead
The COVID-19 Pandemic has had monumental effects on school communities and will continue to profoundly impact students’ social, emotional, and academic wellbeing. The systemic racial and socioeconomic inequities in the educational infrastructure have only been exacerbated by the pandemic. Access to healthcare, childcare, and technology, in particular, have acted as additional barriers to attaining an appropriate education. This is having and will continue to have major impacts on children’s social-emotional learning, wellness, and academic growth.

With the help of community partners, Advance Illinois assembled and facilitated conversations with more than 120 students and caregivers across Illinois in urban, suburban, and rural communities, all of whom have diverse backgrounds and experiences. We compiled our findings into a report, which reflect their testimonies and personal experiences, as well as various ways we can address resource inequity, support social-emotional and academic learning, create a comprehensive recovery and rebuilding plan, prioritize clarity and consistency, and make up for lost time in the classroom.

Join us as we discuss the next steps toward providing each and every Illinois student with the high-quality education they deserve. We want to encourage informed discussions about the impact of COVID-19 on learning and consider what we can do to alleviate those disruptions moving forward.
